Owlmobile VIII

18/09/2013:

No point me trying to sell it on the open market, so as soon as I have IX and my plate transferred, VIII will be available to anyone who wants to take it off my hands, for a nominal consideration open to negotiation.

Ford Escort Mk6 (1998) 5-door GhiaX, Pepper Red (metallic)
2.0 petrol (Mondeo silver-top conversion), 5-speed manual gearbox (iB5), 36-42 mpg
GTi spoiler, skirts (with jacking point covers), spats
Cloth interior, vgc
Air con
No ABS, ESP, or anything stupid like that to go wrong
Electric sunroof conversion
Reversing sensors conversion (controller built into rear bumper)
Remote central locking / dead locking / alarm arming / boot release conversion
Original RDS5000 radio/cassette/CD changer
Post Office wishbones

It all works, except:

The ECU control of the ICV is up the spout so is left disconnected (otherwise revs to 2k on idle). This makes it a bit of a pig stalling when cold, but fine once warmed up. The boot lock cylinder is seized (again!), so the only way in is the electric release. The electric headlamp levelling is questionable.

MoT due 24th October. Last MoT major work was done on the chassis, so that should be OK, but I am dubious about emissions this time round (I fancy the engine needs an overhaul). The bodywork has been kept in good nick, but rust is bubbling up again in various places (particularly the NSR wheel arch).

The front is a little shorter than it should be, having not managed quite to stop when the car in front braked hard for a dog.

The rear bumper is a bit special: it is an after-market bumper (not foam filled like the original), and can't remember how I fitted the spats but it's done without obvious fixings. There are also mud flaps (without them, road dirt tends to sand-blast the paint off the spats). The 4 reversing sensors were purchased a close match to body colour (you would not notice the difference), and to minimise the wiring the controller is fitted within the bumper and weatherproofed. Six wires (reversing sensor power and ground, reversing sounder +/-, licence plate lamp power and ground) have been incorporated into a collar-lock connector fitted in place of the normal grommet, so removing the bumper is only a case of easing it back and then disconnecting the cable.

I have had this car since Feb 2004, 59,000 miles and is now 355,000 miles. No expense has been spared keeping it on the road all this time, and I shall be very unhappy to see it go - but it no longer fulfills my needs. Those who attended Ford Fair this year got the rare opportunity to see Owlmobile IIIV in the flesh.

If nobody wants it, I will have to consign it to scrap. I will take some of the more useful extras off it first, but I am not in a position to break it for parts so if nobody wants it whole perhaps somebody will take it complete for parts.

This is an old photo:

24/08/05: I've changed my year from '98 to '97 as it is a '97 build even though it had a '98 registration.
